Developing the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs: Comcast Business and Junior Achievement – Week 11

The students have been selling their #KeepPhillyWarm blankets for several weeks now.

I hope you all enjoyed last week’s post where I caught up with two of our Junior Achievement (JA) Company Program students, Grant Plotkin and Damani Okuri. If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out. The students offer some unique insights on what its like to build a company from scratch.

The OneLove team has had a bit of time off lately due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and inclement weather, but our students kept things moving via Basecamp, our online collaboration tool. When we got together this week, we started off a focus on professional development. One of our mentors presented a 15-minute module on professionalism in the workplace, addressing phone etiquette, meeting etiquette, appropriate dress, and the like. We also identified further areas of development that we’ll address in subsequent sessions, such as public speaking and PowerPoint.

After that segment, we had the students get to work. They’ve been selling their #KeepPhillyWarm blankets for several weeks now, and both finance and inventory leads needed to account for sales and product. Many of the students have samples out that have not been paid for, and a new batch of inventory has arrived (red blankets!) that the students are eager to move. The marketing team was also putting the finishing touches on the OneLove social media handles – have a look here and be sure to follow and like us:

Those not involved in managing finance, inventory or marketing, rolled up their sleeves and worked on packaging the blankets.

To date, OneLove has sold 235 blankets via direct sale, and also through a sales event the students orchestrated with the Liberty Variety gift shop, located at the Market and Shops at Comcast Center. The students worked with the shop and Comcast building managers to secure space in the Comcast Center lobby to sell blankets, and set it up so that any credit card sale would go through the gift shop and the proprietor would get the proceeds. Five students plus the mentors manned the table, and at the end of the day, they sold 56 blankets. I’m very proud!
