Telemedicine and Ethernet: A Healthy Combination

Telemedicine is Good for Healthcare

Telemedicine can vastly improve healthcare in many ways. It can break barriers of distance, for example in rural areas where quality routine and emergency care may be hard to reach. It can break barriers of time, which is critical in cases such as stroke, heart attack, or trauma. And it can bring doctors and patients together in cases such as rehabilitation, diabetes, and mental health where routine check-ins support successful results.

As high-speed, high-volume telecommunications overcome time and distance between doctors and patients, the speed of effective care delivery accelerates and the costs of delivering quality treatment can fall. Instead of requiring patients to travel physically, data can be transmitted to be centralized and monitored remotely. Patient portals enable patients and their families to participate actively in their own cases by sending and receiving real-time information and taking daily steps to improve health. But these benefits can be realized only if the infrastructure can support the heavy-duty requirements of the technology.

Ethernet is Good for Telemedicine

The rapid adoption of Ethernet has helped accelerate new technologies, devices and data to support existing and emerging practices of telemedicine. Ethernet is ideal for high-bandwidth telemedicine applications thanks to its high capacity, network simplicity, scalability, and flexibility. The bandwidth of Ethernet is multiples of that of legacy systems such as T-1, and Ethernet is rapidly scalable to add additional capacity quickly with no additional equipment needed. Speed and flexibility of expansion enable care providers to expand their telemedicine programs to additional practice areas and to collaborate with other growing networks.

As we spread the reach of Ethernet services beyond the hospitals and clinics and into homes, we hope that a doctor can treat a patient with the help of video, without having to go into the hospital. That will make it easier on care givers as well as the people in need of care.

As a national telehealth service provider, I could not agree more. Once someone learns about telehealth/telemedicine, they often ask, "why have I not heard of this already?". No one wants to be sick, but it is nice to know a doctor is just a call or click away. Our job is to spread the new.
