Report Finds Speed of SD-WAN Implementations Exceeds Expectations

It’s not often that new technology implementations exceed expectations, but a recent survey of IT decision-makers indicates that software-defined wide-area networks (SD-WANs) are delivering home runs to many and at least multiple base hits to others.

This hot networking technology is also proving to be fast to implement. In a survey of IT decision makers conducted by research firm IDG, 66% of the respondents indicated that their SD-WAN implementations had been accomplished within six months and 54% reported that they’d finished in three months or less. Only 8% said that it had taken more than 12 months.

More than 80% of the survey respondents said that the speed of their SD-WAN implementations exceeded expectations. Among that group, 40% said time to implementation had been much shorter than expected. Another 10% indicated that the implementations had met their expectations. Just a handful are struggling to meet their expectations.

With such speedy results, these organizations will more quickly be able to measure what they can achieve in the areas of improved application performance, better control over WAN management, greater reliability, and higher throughput.

Fears about implementation issues are often a deterrent to technology investment by those less inclined to forge ahead without conclusive evidence of success. Now that we’re moving from early testing to full-scale implementation, those who have been sitting on the sidelines waiting for horror stories to emerge may be more inclined to accelerate their own efforts.
